As we’re a third of the way through the year, how are you doing with the goals you set for 2014?

Are you on track or behind schedule?

If you’ve fallen behind, has fear derailed you or dialed your dreams down?

There are so many fears that creep up when you’re working towards stepping up, stepping out, and being seen.

When you’re going after your dreams, you believe it before they see it, that’s faith.

But others may not have the same kind of faith to see your ‘after’ as clearly in focus as you do. In fact, it’s often the reverse.

Generally, people need to see it to believe it. And that’s where I come in…

In part, I believe my work is a little like costuming.

Imagine an actress cast in a movie role. For this example, let’s go with Mariah Carey. She’s a beautiful, glamorous woman. She made the transition from singing to acting in the 2001 movie, Glitter.

After taking the leap, her acting skills were met with disastrous reviews. She was heckled. She even won an award for her performance, the dreaded Rotten Tomato, as the worst performance of the year. At the time, she described her decision to accept this role as the biggest regret of her career.

With that experience behind her, it would have traumatized most and created a belief that it’s not possible, it’s not for me, I am not an actress; I’ll never put myself out there like that again.

But she didn’t stop.

She went right back in and appeared in smaller roles. Nine years later, she was cast in the Academy Award winning film Precious as a welfare caseworker. She received rave reviews!

Imagine her incredible personal journey to get out there and do it again!

423-final

When I saw Mariah appear on screen for the first time, I was shocked. She was transformed… with an incredible make-under. She was costumed in drab, dowdy clothes, no makeup, red under eyes and even a sparse mustache across her upper lip.

Wow, this was not the glamazon we’re used to seeing. Gone was her big hair, over abundance of cleavage, and short, tight clothes.

We had to see Mariah costumed in this role to believe it.

She knew she could do it before she brought us along. She had to look the part.

As you move forward with your stretch goal and take the leap to your next level, we will come along faster and easier when you look the part.

Here are a few thought provoking questions as you continue to make 2014 your biggest year ever. Yes, there’s still plenty of time!

The answers to these questions will require complete honesty. They may even require you to take a photo of yourself for more clarity and objectivity. Or, you could enlist the help of your most honest and trusted friend for feedback.

As you look at yourself:

  • Do you look more like where you’ve been, where you are or where you’re going?
  • Would you hire you for your next level?
  • What are the details that visually hold you back from reaching your next level; is it accessories, the quality of your clothing? Are the colors, fit and shapes working for or against your body?
  • What changes do you need to make, internally and externally to look the part?
  • Do you feel any fear as you imagine making any of these changes?
  • What actions do you need to take for you to manifest your dreams and reach your goals?
